How do I count the words on a website?+
Enter your homepage URL. The counter reads your sitemap, counts the visible text, page titles, and meta descriptions on up to 10 pages, and estimates the total for the whole site from the number of pages in your sitemap.
Why are unique words lower than total words?+
Menus, footers, and other blocks repeat on every page. They only need translating once, so the unique word count is the better guide to translation cost.
How much does it cost to translate a website?+
Professional human translation agencies typically charge $0.10 to $0.25 per word, for each language. A 20,000-word site in three languages is therefore 60,000 words, or roughly $6,000 to $15,000, and changes are billed again. Machine translation with review costs far less.
Does the word count include hidden text or code?+
No. Scripts, styles, and SVG markup are skipped. The count covers what visitors read: body text, link and button labels, page titles, and meta descriptions.
How are Chinese and Japanese counted?+
Languages written without spaces are counted per character, which is how translation vendors usually quote them.
Why did the counter find fewer pages than my site has?+
The free counter reads up to 10 pages and uses your XML sitemap to estimate the rest. Pages that need a login, block automated requests, or are only rendered by JavaScript may not be counted.
