Free website word counter

Website word counter and translation cost calculator

Count the words on your website, then see what it takes to translate them. Repeated menus and footers are counted once, so the estimate matches what a translator would quote.

We read your sitemap and count the visible text, titles, and meta descriptions on up to 10 pages. Nothing is stored.

A word counter built for translation quotes

Ordinary word counters check one block of text. Translation is quoted on the whole site, so this counter samples pages across your sitemap, removes repeated navigation and footers, and turns the result into words per language.

  • Counts body text, titles, and meta descriptions.
  • Counts repeated blocks once, like a translation memory.
  • Estimates the whole site from your sitemap.

Translation cost per word, explained

Agencies price per source word and per target language, so cost grows with every language you add. Website translation platforms price by monthly volume instead, and after the first translation only new or changed text uses your allowance.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

How do I count the words on a website?

Enter your homepage URL. The counter reads your sitemap, counts the visible text, page titles, and meta descriptions on up to 10 pages, and estimates the total for the whole site from the number of pages in your sitemap.

Why are unique words lower than total words?

Menus, footers, and other blocks repeat on every page. They only need translating once, so the unique word count is the better guide to translation cost.

How much does it cost to translate a website?

Professional human translation agencies typically charge $0.10 to $0.25 per word, for each language. A 20,000-word site in three languages is therefore 60,000 words, or roughly $6,000 to $15,000, and changes are billed again. Machine translation with review costs far less.

Does the word count include hidden text or code?

No. Scripts, styles, and SVG markup are skipped. The count covers what visitors read: body text, link and button labels, page titles, and meta descriptions.

How are Chinese and Japanese counted?

Languages written without spaces are counted per character, which is how translation vendors usually quote them.

Why did the counter find fewer pages than my site has?

The free counter reads up to 10 pages and uses your XML sitemap to estimate the rest. Pages that need a login, block automated requests, or are only rendered by JavaScript may not be counted.
